Welcome to Central Baptist Church!

As we strive to be the friendliest church in NYC, we pray you will feel the warmth and love of CBC when you walk in our front door.  We love the Lord and love you.  We hope your visit to Central is wonder filled and that we see you again.  For many, coming to a church for the first time (or the first time in a long time) can be a weird experience.  We put together a few of the questions that our visitors have when they come for the first time.

When are the service times?

We meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM for our Adult Sunday school.Adult Sunday school then takes part in the chapel.  Our Sunday service begins at 11 AM in our sanctuary.

What is a Sunday Morning Service like?

We normally begin with a time of prayer and then begin our worship with music and singing.  Most of these songs follow a contemporary style, but we always have a traditional hymn during our service as well.  Then there is a time of welcome where you will be the featured guest!  Don’t worry: you don’t need to say anything.  We normally provide an opportunity to give an offering to support the work which the church is doing, but please do not feel obligated to give anything.  If you feel comfortable giving, that is great.  If not, that is great also.

Just before our sermon, there is special music which is done by a soloist or by our choir.  This is another opportunity to praise God for Who He is.  Our sermons examine a section of the Bible and demonstrate their application to our lives today.  The Bible is a book which tells the real stories of the real people it talks about and those lessons are then applied to our lives.

Once the sermon is completed, we have prayer counselors who are ready to pray with anyone in the church about any issue.  Usually, the sermon will show us a place in our lives where we need to grow and this time of prayer can be a best starting point.  On a normal Sunday, service lasts about an hour and a half.

What should I wear?

Come as you are: our church serves a community of all ages, cultures and languages. Come in what makes you comfortable: jeans, a suit, dress, sneakers, shoes, or flip flops.  We want to meet you as you are.

What about my children?

We have a nursery which provides a safe place for infants to 6 years old.  Our nursery staff has undergone background checks and has been specially trained for this particular ministry. We have a security system set-up which ensures that children are safe and will only be dismissed to their parents or guardians. The nursery is only staffed during our 11 AM service time.  Even during the times when our nursery is not staffed by volunteers, it is open for parents to use with their children as they need.

For youth aged 6+, we have Children's Sunday School on the second, third and fourth Sundays of the month. (First Sunday is Communion Sunday and we love seeing families together for that celebration!) Classes are broken down by grade (K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th+).  Our youth gather in our balcony and, after Praise and Worship music, they go to various classrooms. Our teachers provide a lesson that is relevant and age appropriate.  After our worship service is completed, you can go to the parlor (third floor) to pick-up your child. Parents must sign-in and sign-out their children from Sunday school.

Is there parking?

Yes, but it is limited.  This is New York, after all!  We have some double-parking in front of the church.  The best way to come to CBC, though, (like everything else in NYC) is through public transportation.  Taking the 1/2/3 train to 96th Street will leave you five blocks from the church.  If you take the B/C train to 96th, you will be about six blocks from the church.  The Directions page can give you more specific directions.

O.k.  I like it at CBC, but I have questions.  What should I do?

If you have a question during service, please speak to any of our prayer counselors, deacons or pastors.  We would be happy to answer your question then or schedule a time to get together that is more convenient.  You can always call our offices during the week at (212) 724-4004 to speak with someone.  Our Contact page above contains more options.

Our Prayer page is also a great place to go if you want to have someone pray for you.

There are a number of options, but just don’t sit on the sidelines!  We are here to support and guide you in the Christian life!
