Our Vision: L4

L4 Logo

L4 reflects the convictions and passion of CBC.  The grounding principle of this vision is stated in Colossians 1:28-29, "He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me."

  • Learning intentionally  (Deut 6:6-7)  speaks to our desire to understand God’s word so we can grow fully mature in Christ.  This is a bedrock value which can only be accomplished within the Body of Christ.  Some of the ministries which help fulfill this vision are: URBACAD, Senior’s Bible Study, Sunday school, Wednesday Night, Big Picture, Abundant Life, AWANA, and our Vacation Bible School (VBS).
  • Leading courageously (Rom 1:16) is our passion to share the gospel, in all of its facets, to all who will listen.  This may be traditional evangelism efforts or it may be services which purposely bring our ambassadors for the kingdom of God into largely non-Christian area of life.  Some of our ministries currently engaging in this way are Missions, Basketball and our After School program.
  • Living sincerely (James 1:22) is the goal of Christian discipleship.  What we say on Sunday morning should be affirmed in word and deed throughout the week.  We should be living without hypocrisy in a world which is always seeking to challenge the truth of our convictions.  A few of our ministries which support this effort are Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship, Senior’s Fellowship, Marriage and Family, Health, and our Pastoral Counseling services.
  • Loving sacrificially (Phil 2:3-4) requires that we are always working towards the benefit of others.  Sometimes this is through our offering, but often it comes from our service to one another.  How do you think of serving others?  Ministry activities like our Thanksgiving baskets, Nursery and various service projects done by our Youth and others.

Our History

Central Baptist Church recently celebrated its 170th anniversary and remains a vital part of its community. Our roots were originally on Laight Street in Lower Manhattan in 1842. The Laight Street and Bloomingdale Baptist Churches combined to become the Central Baptist Church located in Times Square in 1870. During that time, one of Central‘s pastors was the Rev. Robert W. Lowery, one of the 19th century‘s most prolific hymnists, penning such hymns as "Nothing But The Blood" and "Shall We Gather At The River." In 1916, after nearly 25 pastors in 4 to 6 different buildings, Central‘s doors opened at its current location on the Upper West Side at 92nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Associations

Central Baptist Church is a member of The Conservative Baptist Association of America.  CBA is a covenantal fellowship of Regional Associations of Conservative Baptist churches, which have joined together to make the most of the God-given strengths of each member Region for a common purpose.

The Conservative Baptist Association came into existence in 1947 with the purpose of providing a fellowship of churches that hold in common certain basic convictions concerning core issues of biblical faith and Baptist polity. The very word “conservative” gives identity to the movement, because the intent was to conserve (to keep, to retain) the basic biblical distinctives that have historically distinguished Baptists as a people of God. Furthermore, Conservative Baptists have, from their inception, been deeply involved in a worldwide missionary outreach.
